Information about the surgical treatment
of obesity thanks to an adjustable banding.
Who is concerned by surgical treatment?
- Today, one must be between 18 and 68 years old.
- An index of body mass (IMC or BMI) of 35 kg/m² with
complications which, could disappear with weight-loss (arterial hypertension,
diabetes, and respiratory problems, sleep apnea, crippling golnagy).
- Or an index of bodily mass of at least 40kg/m, without any
complication.
The index of bodily mass is calculated by dividing the stated weight in
kg multiplied by the height expressed in square meters. For example a patient
of 140kg (1.70m)² =48kg/m²
- To have permanent overweight for at least 5 years.
- To have tried to lose weight, without any lasting result,
for at least one year after being medically taken in charge.
- Not to suffer from any disease, in particular endocrine diseases,
which might be held responsible chiefly for overweight.
- To be prepared to completely change one’s eating habits,
one’s life-style and to accept that the team, which takes charge of
the patient, continues to follow him a long time after the medical intervention.
- Not to consume too much alcohol, or to present a dependence
on drugs.
What are the necessary pre–operative medical check-up
requirements?
They are carried out by a multi-disciplinary team composed of :
- A surgeon who is experienced in laparoscopy surgery and
above all qualified in the surgery of obesity. .
- A nutritionist doctor to act in pre and post-operative to
lead the patient in the choice of foods and to avoid eventual dietary lacks.
- A psychiatrist who will determine the patient’s ability
to stand the intervention and the important bodily modification which might
occur and thus propose a psychologically adapted post- operative surveillance.
- An anaesthetic team, a reanimation team, used to the anaesthesia
of obese characters. The anaesthetists will be consulted during the pre-operative
check-up and also 8 to 10 days before the intervention itself.
- Various specialists, if need be and in particular a qualified
lung specialist in pathology of the sleep.
